Facts about imambara qadeem, zadibal
It was the first Imambara constructed in Kashmir Valley by Kaji Chak, minister in the regime of Sultan Mohammad in the year 1518. This Imambara has a horrifying history as it was burnt down and destroyed number of times.
  1. For the first time, Imambara was burnt down by Mirza Hyder Kashgari (Duglat) because of communal intolerance in the year 1548.
  2. In the year 1551, Daulat Chak rebuilt the Imambara.
  3. For the second time, Imambara was burnt down by Zafar Kupwari in the year 1553.
  4. Imambara was burnt down again by the enemies of Ahlulbayt (AS) in the year 1635 during the reign of Shah Jahan.
  5. In the year 1682, during the reign of Aurangzeb Alamgir, Imambara was burnt down yet again.
  6. For the fifth time, Imambara was again burnt down in the year 1719 during the conflict known as Mukhtawi Khan conflict.
  7. In the year 1748, Imambara was burnt down by some unknown enemies of Ahlulbayt (AS).
  8. For the seventh time, in the year 1763, Imambara was burnt down again by some unknown enemies of Ahlulbayt (AS).
  9. In the year 1801, during Afghan rule, Imambara was burnt down on 24th June on the eve of Ashura.
  10. Imambara was burnt down during the Sikh rule on 29th July 1830. On that fateful day thousands of shias were brutally murdered at Margibal (Ali Park, Zadibal). Hakim Mehdi Ali Khan Kashmiri, the then minister of Nasru-din, the king of Avadh, sent financial aid to Haji Baqir Khan Irani to rebuild the Imambara, who in turn got it rebuilt through Hatim Mir.
  11. Imambara was burnt down yet again during the rule of Dogra ruler, Mahraja Ranbir Singh in September 1872. Mahraja then provided about Rs 3 Lakhs as financial aid for reconstruction of Imambara.

    In all, Imambara has been burnt down 10 times by the ememies of Ahlulbayt (AS) but on every occasion the lovers of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his household, Ahlulbayt (AS) have emerged stronger and rebuilt it.
Imambara is now under the control of All Jammu & Kashmir Shia Assocaition. Old Imambara was dismantled in the year 2004 and to make way for new Imambara. New Imambara is still under construction and work is in progress albeit at a sluggish pace.
